British Rail gone mad?

So now it seems the if you buy a ticket to go somewhere on a train, you’re legally bound to stay on the train until it gets to your stated destination. Unless of course you get off a train in a station without an automatic ticket barrier.

So does it really mean that in effect you can get off the train early as long as it can’t be traced? Because surely a ‘law’ that can’t be enforced all the time is a farce and merely an opportunity for rail officials with a ‘Napoleon’ complex to flex their wimpy authority muscles?

I have often written about the need to read car hire contracts carefully, especially if there’s a chance you may need to return the car early (because yes, some car rental companies will charge you for this) but at least they’re consistent and the policy enforced regardless.

It seem the epitome of stupidity that British Rail employees can ‘choose’ whether to enforce it depending on whether you can escape the station without going through a machine, perhaps we should organise a rail ‘resistance’ to help travelers ‘escape’ if they get off a stop early?

What I wonder will the rail companies do if for example a train cannot finish its journey and a bus is brought in? Will they give back some of the train fare? Or, as seems more likely will they make a further charge, one for getting off the train before your designated stop and the other for the bus fare!

Booking car hire with a broker

I’ve written many articles on why it’s better to book with a car hire broker than direct but it’s always worth repeating the main themes.

First and foremost is price because brokers bulk buy they get much better discounts than the general public can (the car rental companies allow them to sell cheaper because they are a large part of the market).

So generally speaking you’ll get a better price from a broker than you will if you go direct.

Second reason is availability, let’s say you want to rent a car from Heathrow airport and you go direct to the supplier who has 2000 cars at that location. How many flights come into Heathrow? One of the busiest airports in the world, how many of those passengers would want to hire a car?

Doesn’t take long for those 2000 rental cars to be all booked and unavailable, with the cheaper cars going first. Now think about a car rental broker who has contracts with all the major suppliers and let’s say there are six of them all with 2000 cars on fleet. That’s 12,000 cars they have to choose from to offer you.

Thirdly there’s time saved, you want to get the best deal on your hire car right? So you decide to surf several sites and compare the rates and quickly you become either fed up (I know I hate surfing like that) or you see so many prices that they blur.

Well with a broker, they do the surfing for you, they compare rates and present you the cheapest supplier from all the contracts they have. Not only that, brokers constantly monitor the market, so if someone drops prices to gain clients, the brokers very quickly follow suit. So you always know you’re getting the very best rates going.
