Before you arrive in South Africa, check on your booking confirmation for the name of your supplier (e.g. Avis, Hertz, etc.). Your voucher will have full pick up instructions. You will need to show your passport, voucher, credit card, national driving license and an International Driving Permit (obtainable in your home country from motoring organisations (e.g. AA, AAA, RAC, RACE, etc).

Before signing, carefully read the supplier’s terms and conditions to ensure there are no surprise clauses (e.g. If you are driving to a different state such as Botswana, check your insurance policy covers this.) Make sure the rental contract shows any damage, scratches, etc. – insist that the staff note existing damage on your agreement as having been done before your agreement commences.

You also need to check the vehicle is equipped with the required safety equipment for the country you are travelling to (e.g. warning triangles). Check the fuel policy with the supplier. Usually vehicles must be returned as full as they were when handed over to you - otherwise you will be charged to refill the car on return – probably at a higher rate than pump prices!
