Car Hire Florida

Places to Visit in the US

Well, as we all know, America is a vast country with just about every imaginable topography and climate within it’s borders. Having said that, if you are in the vicinity of any of these, you must visit the

  • Key West, Key West, Key West..oh did I mention Key West?
  • Miami - especially the Art Deoc district along Miami beach.
  • Disney/Epcot - just to see what the mind of man can conceive!
  • Everglades, take a flying boat but remember the 'flying bugs' and wear a good repellent.
  • Cape Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center.

My favorite things

Key West, Mallory Square (ok by now you know I love Key West).
The weather.
The people.

Driving tips/rules.

The USA has VERY strict drink drive rules and each sate is a little different so please check the rules before you drive..better yet... DON’T drink and drive even in a hire car as the car hire company that you rented the vehicle from will debit your credit card to pay the cost of the fine if you don't.

Remember... in the US you will be on the wrong side of both the road AND the car. You are used to judging the greater distance on your left side but now the width of the car will be on your right, the gear change (shift) is on the right, the person to scream at / talk to, is also over there and it’s an automatic...!! (scared yet??).

Actually, once you get the hang of things, driving in the US is a breeze..the roads are very good and well signposted. Just try not be in LA at rush hour if you have a deadline that evening..traffic can be (read usually IS) a nightmare!!

Also note that in some (not all) States there is a “right turn on red” rule..which means; if you come to a traffic light that is red and you want to turn right, you can do this as long as you come to a complete stop first and are sure that the road is clear to your left..(this is a very basic explanation so check with whatever State you are visiting to make sure of the specifics)

Interesting facts

  • It is believed that Florida had been inhabited for thousands of years before any European settlements were established.
  • A museum in Sanibel claims to be the only museum in the world that is dedicated only to mollusks. It houses 2 million shells.
  • Clearwater city of Florida has the highest rate of lightning strikes, per capita, in the whole of USA.
  • The first suntan cream was made in Miami Beach, Florida, in 1944, by pharmacist Benjamin Green.
  • The first bank ATM was installed in Miami for rollerbladers

Local food/drink

Where to start? Florida has great seafood, especially stone crabs and catfish. It's a fusion quisine because of the many people who come to live there from so many different backgrounds. Try any 'Mom and Pop' type restuarant, some will be pretty good and occasionally you'll find somewhere that gives you a meal so fantastic you want to cry, when you find it, let us know!

Seriously though, florida has good 'southern' cooking and enough diversity to keep you interested .

Weather

Nicknamed the “Sunshine State” Summers are long, warm, and fairly humid. Expect afternoon storms during mid summer months. Winters are mild with periodic interruptions of cool to occasionally cold air. Coastal areas in all sections of Florida average slightly warmer temperatures in winter and cooler ones in summer. Oh and don’t forget the occasional hurricane!

If you're picking up your hire care from Orlando airport you will find some airport information here.
