Although Australia is a continent in its own right it is also one huge island (plus a few smaller offshore islands). In fact, the mainland is the largest island and the world’s flattest continent!

Being about the same land mass as the forty-eight US mainland states and about twice the size of Europe, makes Australia the sixth largest country in the world. Conversely, it has the lowest population density in the world - just two people per square kilometre!

Places to Visit in Australia

• Uluru (Ayres Rock) the worlds largest single rock.
• The Great Barrier Reef - over 1,400 miles of coral reefs and small islands.
• Brisbane - after the natural wonder of the GBR try a man made city, now becoming more famous for it's nightlife and food.
• Sydney Opera House
• Bondi Beach - you know you have to - just to say you did!

Interesting facts

• The Great Barrier Reef is home to the world’s largest oyster, weighing up to more than six pounds.
• Australia’s tallest mountain is Mt Kosciuszko, which seven thousand feet high.
• The world's longest continuous fence was built to keep sheep safe from Australia's native dog, the dingo. It stretches for nearly three thousand five hundred miles through South Australia and central Queensland.
• The world’s longest piece of straight railroad track runs about three hundred miles across South Australia’s vast Nullarbor Plain.
